Ian Whittlesea – Trataka

Ian Whittlesea – Trataka

Trataka is a yogic practice of concentration honed through staring at the center of a candle flame. It is said to still the mind, stimulate the pineal gland, open the third eye and promote the psychic abilities.

This book may be used as an aid to daily meditation, a flic book for the impatient or as a memento mori.

Text, images, design and production by Ian Whittlesea, published in 2020 by Arnaud Desjardin's The Everyday Press, printed by The Westdale Press and distributed by Antenne Books.

Softcover, 22 x 15 cm, isbn 978-1-912458-10-3

Ian Whittlesea – On Colour...

Ian Whittlesea
On Colour...

A book by Ian Whittlesea published by The Everyday Press, London, Fall 2019

On Colour... draws on the theories of colour harmony that Johannes Itten taught at the Bauhaus, and on the literature of Mazdaznan, Rosicrucianism and Theosophy. It describes how one can, potentially, produce the white cloud of invisibility and documents the author's own attempts to manifest the cloud.
These manifestations have a complex group of antecedents that include Lawrence Weiner's early spray-painted works, John Latham's One Second Drawings, Robert Irwin's luminous disc paintings of the 1960s and representations of the ineffable made by spiritualists and occultists.
Text, images, design and production by Ian Whittlesea, published by Arnaud Desjardin / The Everyday Press, printed by Aldgate Press, distributed in Europe by Antenne Books and in North America by Artbook / D.A.P.

Ian Whittlesea – Becoming Invisible, Artnight London 1 July 2017

Ian Whittlesea
Becoming Invisible (2017)

Art Night
London, 1 July 2017

Site-specific adaptation of an ongoing project
Immersive light and sound installation

Entrance at the signposted meeting point on the south-east side
Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 2UP

6pm–2am, every 40 minutes
Duration: 35 Minutes
Language: English

Ian Whittlesea invites the audience to take part in an illuminated meditation in the Bascule Chamber, located inside Tower Bridge. His ongoing work Becoming Invisible is adapted to the rarely accessed cavernous space. This experiential and performative audio installation is accompanied by a light show ranging from total darkness to the most intense light imaginable. The audience, in groups of 50, is guided down into the chamber by the voice of hypnotherapist Ruth Sabrosa, alongside the sound of rhythmic breathing and visualisation cues. Once in the Chamber the participants are asked to reflect on the colour spectrum and finally to step into a white cloud, perhaps allowing them to become permanently invisible.
A project supported by Art Night’s Patron Circle 2017, kindly hosted by Tower Bridge.

The Egyptian Postures
Dr. Otoman Zar-Adusht Ha’nish

The Egyptian Postures is a guide to the most advanced Mazdaznan exercises that Johannes Itten taught his students at the Bauhaus. Often performed while singing or humming the postures were intended to activate glands and re-channel internal energies, stirring the blood in ways that contributed to the perpetual evolution of humanity. They were also said to induce auto-illumination, the participant’s body generating an intense light from within.

This edition of Dr. Otoman Zar-Adusht Ha’nish’s original instructions has been newly edited and illustrated by Ian Whittlesea with images of actor Ery Nzaramba demonstrating the postures and an in-depth essay by Pádraic E. Moore that explores the relationships between esoteric movements, their racial theories and early modernism's embrace and eventual dismissal of the occult, Mazdaznan and Itten.

Sarah Dobai & Ian Whittlesea
at Roaming ROOM
Thursday 9th February

London

Sarah Dobai
will be staging a new performance work entitled The Forged Coupon. The work will feature footage streamed from an inaccessible room in the gallery building accompanied by a live reading of excerpts from Leo Tolstoy’s short story ‘The Forged Coupon’ (1912). The story unfolds from a scene that tells of a schoolboy solving his need for money by passing off a large value forged bank note to pay for a frame in a photography shop.
The performance relates to the forthcoming Everyday Press publication The Copyists.

Ian Whittlesea
will be presenting a series of posters in advance of the artist’s upcoming publication The Egyptian Postures featuring photographs of Ery Nzaramba demonstrating twelve esoteric Finger Exercises.
Ian Whittlesea’s work is concerned with words, and with the ability of text to transform the physical and psychic state of the viewer. It assumes many forms, from painstaking paintings to printed books, ephemeral posters and transient projections, and explores the relationships between language, image and diagram both on the page and in the world.

Tenderbooks

Tenderbooks is pleased to present a display of books, drawings, records, pamphlets and ephemera collected by artist Ian Whittlesea. Some for sale, others not, the collection documents the information and inspiration behind Whittlesea's own publications.
Part physical bibliography and part record of interrelated and overlapping obsessions, the display links Johannes Itten, the Bauhaus, Mazdaznan, Yves Klein and judo with alchemy, physical culture, theosophy, Rosicrucianism and theories of invisibility.
A limited edition letterpress bookplate will be published to accompany the display and a number of the original drawings for Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture will be on show.
There will also be a short discussion between Anna Gritz (Associate Curator, South London Gallery) and Ian Whittlesea at 7.30pm on the night of the opening.

Ian Whittlesea’s work is concerned with words, and with the ability of text to transform the physical and psychic state of the viewer. His translation of Yves Klein’s Les Fondements du Judo was published in 2009 and his newly illustrated edition of Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture in 2012. These texts, along with his most recent book Becoming Invisible, have been collectively described as ‘instruction manuals for transcendental exercise’. He is represented by Marlborough Contemporary, London.
