Boats and voyages lend themselves to the meta-narrative. They are always leaving or arriving, they adapt to high and low pressure, confront depression, run ahead of storms, find safe places, shelter in hurricane holes and dry out in harbours. They are a micro system for a larger state of affairs. They miniaturize and intensify our contingencies for survival and the experiences of our everyday lives.
