Alan Charlton – Torilla, Hatfield


Torilla – the house of Alan Charlton and Lesley Foxcroft in Hatfield, England. The house was build in 1934 by the British modernist architect F.R.S. Yorke, with a later extension by Marcel Breuer.

    I was pleased to find your photograph in Google Images and so your blog. I first came across this house in my used copy of Yorke's own book, 'The Modern House' (8th edition, 1957). Later, I read a report about the building's decline and an unsuccessful bid to have it demolished, which was back in the 90s, I think. The house looks wonderful in your photograph, so it seems there was a happy ending after all, which is great news.
