A catalogue of the collection of artworks for the Ward Block, New Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow, 2011.

The New Stobhill Hospital was designed by Reiach and Hall Architects and opened in 2009. Thomas A Clark was commissioned to lead a group of artists to install artworks in the New Stobhill Hospital. There are permanent installations of works by Olwen Shone, Andreas Karl Schulze, Kenneth Dingwall, Donald Urquhart and Thomas A Clark. For the Ward Block of NSH a collection of artworks from Scottish artists was chosen by the curator Lindsay Blair.

Les Funerailles de la Baleine is a short film telling the tale of the collective ritual which accompanied the final stage of the Balena Project by the artist Claudia Losi. The material stage of the project began in 2004 and came to a close in October 2010.
The art project, conceived as an ongoing work, drew inspiration from the rich imagery which has historically been attached to this giant mammal, right up to contemporary imagery and the environmental battles for which the whale has often been used as a symbol.
A fin whale, 24 metres long, created entirely in fine wool fabric, air pockets and padding, was transported around Italy and abroad like an old-fashioned fairground attraction, at each stage taking on new forms of meaning, giving rise to new stories and invoking the recollection of memories. In October 2010, this ‘symbolic device’ returned to the place where the fabric of which it was made was produced, and over the course of a 24-hour performance in the rooms of the ex-textile factory, this rite of passage was carried out. A ‘funeral’ of the whale’s body, which was transformed into a variety of new objects/forms/thoughts: under the guidance of the stylist Antonio Marras, master seamsters used the fabric to create men’s jackets lined with a material printed in the form of a magazine article describing the evolution of the project. Other whale-forms were created out of the mother whale’s stuffing, as well as bags made from the inflatable air pockets inside her. As the conductor of the funeral band, the singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela accompanied a part of the performance with as-of-then unpublished songs and readings.
Les Funerailles de la Baleine tells the story of that performance and that rite of passage which, with a sense of magic and symbolism, reflects the notion of the “ecology of art”, according to which the work is not looked upon as a fixed and static object, but rather as a crossover point, one of shifts and changes both in terms of materials and sense.

Sean Kelly Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of Peter Liversidge’s new exhibition, Where We Begin. The opening will take place on Thursday, December 8th, from 6pm until 8pm. The artist will be present.

Where We Begin will be Liversidge’s premiere exhibition with the gallery. From the earliest stages of his career, the genesis of Liversidge’s creative process has been the conceptually-based practice of developing proposals for artworks across a wide range of mediums, including performance, drawing, photography, video and neon. Liversidge types his proposals on an old, manual typewriter; complete with typographical errors and handwritten annotations, the proposals for Where We Begin describe ideas from the practical to the purely hypothetical, which, when viewed in totality, create a unique narrative specifically related to the forthcoming exhibition and the beginning of his relationship with the gallery.

While all of the proposals for Where We Begin will be displayed in the exhibition, the artist has chosen to realize only a select group. In many cases, these realized proposals relate to found objects that Liversidge encountered on his recent visits to New York. Banal, everyday materials are repurposed for his use, in this case stripped of their original intent by being re-made in materials most often associated with fine art: a stack of old tractor tires found on the roadside in upstate New York will be shown as a classical marble sculpture; small twigs from a tree that fell near the artist during a morning walk in Soho will be cast in aluminum; and a commercially-available help wanted sign – found at a local five and dime – will be enlarged to five times its normal size and screen printed on aluminum.

Liversidge’s work often requires the presence of the viewer and their unique interpretation of the proposals to complete the aesthetic experience. The artist’s active engagement with each space and community for which he creates proposals is at the center of his varied and dynamic practice. In one such work for the exhibition, Liversidge has invited the gallery’s postal carrier to create an arrangement of found objects – rulers, t-squares and protractors, among others – that the artist has sent through the mail from London. The arrangement of these objects, displayed on a shelf in the exhibition, will be at the sole discretion of the mail carrier and can be rearranged by her during the course of the show as she sees fit. Other proposed performative actions will take place throughout the duration of the exhibition, some involving gallery staff and others requiring the participation of professional musicians such as Elizabeth Mitchell, who will perform in the gallery on the afternoon of December 17th. Visitors to Where We Begin are also invited to participate in the exhibition by creating artworks through actions outlined by Liversidge within the proposals.

Liversidge has worked with a diverse range of institutions, including the Tate Liverpool in 2008, the Centre d’art Santa Mònica, Barcelona, in 2008, Bloomberg SPACE, London, in 2009 and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, in 2010. He has also developed projects for the Europalia Festival, Brussels, in 2007, Art Basel Miami Beach in 2009 and Edinburgh’s sculpture park, Jupiter Artland, also in 2009. Upcoming exhibitions include Travelling Light, Whitechapel Gallery, London, December 2011 through February 2012 and Proposals for Helsinki at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, in 2012.

After the attacks of 9/11 nearly 100 dogs were deployed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to join the rescue works at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Charlotte Dumas tracked down 15 dogs which are still alive, visited and photographed them.

The book Retrieved which accompanyings the exhibitions is published by the Ice Plant publishers, Los Angeles. There's also a special autographed edition with a signed photograph in an edition of 2 x 50 copies

'... These animals were all at the same place at the same time, one decade ago, for the same reason: to work. That experience unites them, and was the incentive for me to pursue this subject and to photograph the dogs. They now share the vulnerability of old age while symbolizing a full decade now coming to a close.'

A total of 30.000 euro which was needed to complete the amount necessary for buying the work, was donated by 119 persons. The work, which was on loan for 30 years at the Van Abbemuseum is part of the exhibition Vanuit Hier – Out of Here at the museum until 8 January 2012

Peter Liversidge has collaborated with the band Balmorhea on a film for the backdrop on their European tour which starts on 28th October at Bozar, Brussels and ends at Paradiso, Amsterdam on November 15th.

Having included the minimalist instrumental ensemble, Balmorhea (from Austin, Texas) in proposals for his own shows, Peter Liversidge will now take his place in theirs and an especially made video work will accompany Balmorhea’s EU tour in support of their recent release, Live at Sint-Elisabethkerk.

On 29 September 2011 was the presentation of the book bomenmuseum, a catalogue of more than 400 trees in the housing project Wateringse Veld, The Hague. The concept and design of the planting of these trees is by herman de vries. Among the 400 different trees are 43 different species of the Oak tree in the Vlietpark, in the centre of this housing project.

This day was also the official opening of this project, which was started in 1996. At the opening Cees de Boer gave an introduction to the work of herman de vries.

The catalogue, a book with 524 pages describing all the trees, is free available for the residents of this area.

For the first time, British artist Hamish Fulton has dedicated a walk for an exhibition in a Parisian gallery. Romain Torri’s invitation relied on the condition that the artist had to choose a natural site in France and that the gallery would produce the whole artistic process.
Among the nine French National Parks, Hamish Fulton has chosen the Mercantour, known for its wild and varied landscapes due to the proximity of the ‘massif’ with the Mediterranean Sea. Then, the period to make this hike and the itinerary through the Park had to be determined.
Rapidly, the artist suited the symbolic date of the summer solstice to end his trek. Three weeks of walk and wild camping would be ample time to go through the Mercantour from South to North between the village of Sospel (departure June 1st 2011) and the winter sports resort of Barcelonnette (arrival June 21st 2011).
